Article: Public speaks out on redistricting process/ Republicans oppose splitting up El Paso County

Some came with an agenda. Others came to learn.

Regardless of their reasons, about 75 people from Colorado Springs and El Paso County told a bipartisan commission of state lawmakers Wednesday how they feel about redistricting, the complex and deeply political process of subdividing the state into congressional districts.

It takes place each decade after the U.S. Census.

This time, state lawmakers must cut Colorado into seven congressional districts because the state earned an extra seat in the U.S. House of Representatives thanks to population growth - more than 1 million new people between 1990 and 2000.
