The venue
The industrial landscape of the Potteries is an unlikely place to
find a forest full of monkeys. But beyond the defunct pot banks and
coal mines there are plenty of green spaces, not least the pleasure
park, Trentham Gar-dens. At the southern end of that estate, 60
acres have been enclosed to provide a home for 140 Barbary Macaques.
There they roam in freedom, interacting at will with the humans who
pay to get a closer look by following a trail amid the trees where
the monkeys play. It's an extraordinarily intimate experience,
enhanced by the presence of knowledgeable staff who roam the grounds
to offer visitors an insight into the monkeys' behaviour and reveal
some of the cheeky ...
