Would you like to hear the sweet sound of laughter? Contact the benefits office where you work and ask if there's any chance that your pension someday -- if you get one at all -- will be a lump sum payment of, say, $2.3 million plus $136,800 a year in walking-around money.

Assuming I could last in this job until age 70, which is numerous decades away for me, my annual pension would be roughly $23,000 a year, I was told when I called Tuesday. That means I'd probably have to get a job skimming the county executive's pool to make ends ...
