South Milwaukee cited for sewage

DNR says haulers use plant after hours, drop loads down manholes

South Milwaukee -- Private waste haulers have routinely dumped their loads at the South Milwaukee sewage treatment plant after hours when no plant officials were working.

Industrial and septic system waste haulers also dropped their loads down manholes into sewers in residential neighborhoods, according to the Department of Natural Resources.

Both practices are illegal under state law, which has prompted the DNR to cite the city for violating its permit to operate the sewage treatment plant.
