Council panel gives nod to Park East street upgrades

Plan calls for $4.4 million in improvements to leftover land

City Hall moved forward Tuesday on what could be Milwaukee's next hot commercial development area: land beneath and adjacent to the Park East Freeway.

The Common Council's Zoning, Neighborhoods and Development Committee recommended approval of plans to spend $4.4 million on street improvements that would replace the Park East, which will be torn down.

The demolition of the underused freeway is set to begin in May and is expected take a year. Once it is gone, over 20 acres will be available for future ...
