Even non-bakers get out the mixing bowl and measuring cups when it's cold outside and they get a craving for something sweet -- like, say, chocolate-chip cookies.

These recipes combine the widespread winter baking urge with that favorite ingredient. They are all from Nestle Foods.

Oatmeal Scotchies

1 1/4 cups flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup (2 sticks) butter or margarine, room temperature

3/4 cup granulated sugar

3/4 cup packed brown sugar

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract or grated peel of 1 orange

3 cups quick or old-fashioned oats
