Wisconsin's wolf population grows to 320, DNR says

Tally a step toward removing animal from threatened species list

Wisconsin's wolf population grew sharply over the winter and now totals about 320, the state Department of Natural Resources said Tuesday.

The tally signals a victory for wolf recovery in Wisconsin, starts a process of removing wolves as a threatened species and could lead to an open season on the animals.

Last year, state wildlife officials and volunteers using radio transmitters counted 251 wolves in the state.
