Inhaled steroids safe for children with asthma

A government panel has recommended inhaled corticosteroids as the preferred first-line approach to treating mild or moderate asthma in children, reassuring parents and physicians that the treatment does not slow growth in children.

"There is very convincing data that doses you would use, although there may be a small loss of growth, are safe," said William Busse, chairman of the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program expert panel. "Any loss resolves itself after one year of treatment."
