Eye drops may delay, prevent glaucoma

Chicago -- Eye drops used to treat an eye pressure condition that affects up to 6 million Americans can delay and perhaps even prevent glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness, a study suggests.

The eye condition, called ocular hypertension, involves elevated pressure within the eyeball and results when fluid flowing into and out of the eye drains too slowly. It affects 4% to 7% of U.S. adults over 40 and raises the risk of developing glaucoma.

Ocular hypertension is treated with a number of prescription eye drops. But until now, doctors did not know whether treatment could forestall glaucoma.
