Lump-sum dispute goes to court

County's largest union seeks to avoid halt in 'backdrops'

The largest Milwaukee County employee union went to court Friday to preserve "backdrops," lump-sum retirement payments that have become extremely popular since the county pension scandal surfaced earlier this year.

The county Pension Board on Wednesday had discussed the possibility of halting any further lump-sum payments after state Attorney General Jim Doyle suggested that the ordinance creating the benefit might have been adopted illegally.
