Toronto -- U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G. Thompson asked the pharmaceutical industry to swallow a bitter pill Monday: Cut prescription costs or run the risk of price controls.

"Pharmaceuticals in the United States have to become more affordable," Thompson told a crowd of about 3,000 as the keynote speaker of the Biotechnology Industry Organization convention known as BIO2002.
