Thompson says drug prices must come down
Possibility of controls mentioned at convention

Toronto -- U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G.
Thompson asked the pharmaceutical industry to swallow a bitter pill
Monday: Cut prescription costs or run the risk of price controls.
"Pharmaceuticals in the United States have to become more
affordable," Thompson told a crowd of about 3,000 as the keynote
speaker of the Biotechnology Industry Organization convention known
as BIO2002.
The Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America refused
comment on Thompson's speech because, the Washington-based trade
