French onion soup gets golden touch

French Onion Soup

Homemade croutons (see note)

1 1/2 pounds thinly sliced yellow onions (about 3 large)

3 tablespoons margarine or butter

1 tablespoon peanut oil

1/4 teaspoon sugar

3 tablespoons flour

1 1/2 cans (14 1/2 ounces each) beef broth

4 beef bouillon cubes

4 1/2 cups boiling water

1/2 cup dry white wine or dry vermouth

3 to 4 1/2 cups grated Swiss cheese

Make croutons and set aside.
