Hung-Mao Tien told Kathleen Falk to aim for great goals. He told her she had what it took to meet them.

It was a pivotal message for Falk as she emerged from a childhood in Milwaukee and rural Waukesha County, a daughter in a family that was warm but not prone to thinking big when it came to education or careers. Her parents' jobs included running a custard stand in Milwaukee and a liquor store; her father was an alcoholic.
