Drowning Deaths on the Decline The number of drowning deaths in the United States is on the decline, according to government figures, and health experts say there is good news and bad news behind the numbers. The rate of drownings per 100,000 Americans fell from 2.62 in 1985 to 1.75 in 1996, the most recent year for which figures are available.
