Seize your audience's attention at the start

It's unfair, but audiences begin to judge a speaker the moment he or she is introduced, even before he or she starts talking.

Here are a few steps to be sure you create a positive impression during those first few important moments:

First, don't start talking until you're ready. Take all the time you need to walk to the front of the room, organize your notes, and take a breath. Do all of this in silence. It will seem like a long time to you but not to your audience.
