Financial skills must include understanding mutual funds

For three reasons, I've decided to devote the next two columns to
explaining how mutual funds work.
First, the evidence keeps mounting that most Americans lack even
the most elementary knowledge about mutual funds -- and that what
they don't know can hurt them.
Second, the ills that plague many funds, including their often
hidden costs, have become much more troublesome during a bear market
in stocks.
And third, I had promised a while back to discuss mutual funds as
part of an ongoing series of columns on basic financial skills.
