Statement ties attacks in Kenya to al-Qaida

Missile launchers also linked to terror group

Washington -- A statement attributed to al-Qaida claimed responsibility Monday for last week's car bombing of an Israeli- owned hotel in Kenya and the attempt to shoot down an Israeli airliner the same day.

U.S. authorities regard the al-Qaida claim, posted on an Islamic extremist Web site, as credible, American counterterrorism officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity. But the statement's authenticity couldn't be officially confirmed.
