First cruise ship stop at island is brief

Kaunakakai, Hawaii -- The first visit by a luxury cruise ship to a rural Hawaiian island was spoiled by rough water and windy conditions that prevented 1,200 passengers from coming ashore, even as demonstrators gathered to protest the arrival.

The quick departure of Holland America Line's Statendam from Molokai on Saturday had "absolutely nothing" to do with the about 100 protesters, said Sandy Beddow, executive director of the Molokai Visitors Association.

Protesters argued cruise ships would damage Molokai's coral reefs, pollute the waters and spoil the island's rural charm.
