Alluring flavor of poppy seeds gives cheese tart an exotic Hungarian twist

Poppy seeds always sound very dangerous and exotic because of their connection with the opium poppy plant. But opium is actually extracted from the unripe pods -- so once the seeds are ripe, which is the form in which they are sold, they have no narcotic effect.

Poppy seeds mostly are used for confections and desserts. A favorite is the Hungarian blue poppy seed. I guess Europeans love poppy seeds because of their similarity to walnuts in flavor.
