In 1972, Kohl's meant food stores

Thirty years ago, only a fool would have predicted the Kohl's name would survive in retailing because of department rather than food stores.

So much for common wisdom.

Today, Kohl's Department Stores has become a coast-to-coast chain, opening 28 outlets in metropolitan Los Angeles to boost its total to 485.

Kohl's Food Stores, meanwhile, is down to 23 stores in the Milwaukee area, and they are up for sale. A new owner could easily discard the name, as is happening in Madison, where Copps Corp. is buying seven Kohl's.

Quite a turnaround from 1972, when the the Kohl family sold ...
