Taste of tradition rises to top as judges sniff out U.S. winner

In the end, a traditional Old World cheese stood alone.

The 2003 United States Championship Cheese Contest held in Milwaukee last week drew intriguing, newfangled specialty cheeses -- from morel and leek jack cheese, lobster bisque gourmet cheese spread and five-peppercorn cheddar to goat's milk cheese coated in cocoa.

Each of these won gold medals in their individual classes during the contest sponsored by the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association.
