They slip in when you're not paying attention and can undermine your healthy habits. They are hidden calories, and they turn seemingly healthy foods into high-calorie fare with little notice.

Take those hearty, jumbo loaves of bread that seem to radiate good nutrition. But a slice of whole-wheat can swell to 2 ounces and 150 calories, compared with 1 ounce and about 75 calories for standard whole-wheat.

Slice that bread yourself and the numbers can jump higher.
