Washington -- Air National Guard and Army National Guard headquarters offices across the country and in American-held territories will be slashed by about two-thirds, Lt. Gen. H. Steven Blum, the top National Guard officer, said Friday.

The National Guard currently maintains a sprawling bureaucracy that includes 162 headquarters organizations in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.

In each state and territory, there are separate headquarters for the Air National Guard, for the Army National Guard, and for the Adjutants General, who are the commanders of National Guard ...
