Saks earnings up compared with a year ago, but sales figures down

Birmingham, Ala. -- Retailer Saks Inc. swung to a profit for its first fiscal quarter, compared with a loss a year ago.

The Birmingham, Ala.-based company owns the Boston Store and Younkers department store chains.

For the first three months ended May 3, Saks earned $14.4 million, or 10 cents per share, compared with a loss of $25.4 million, or 17 cents per share, in the year-ago period.

The results a year ago included charges that totaled $47.3 million
