Council OKs water sale to New Berlin

Milwaukee reverses course; regional cooperation hailed

A deal to sell Lake Michigan water to New Berlin moved ahead Tuesday after the Milwaukee Common Council handily approved it, prompting officials from both cities to tout the agreement as the first step toward greater regional cooperation across county lines.

In a 15-1 vote, the council authorized Milwaukee officials to sign a water service agreement with the Waukesha County suburb that would net $608,000 a year for Milwaukee and help solve New Berlin's water woes as the growing city fends off future shortages.
