Verplank opens up three-stroke lead

Scott Verplank fired a sizzling 9-under-par 63 for a three-stroke
lead after the second round of the HP Classic of New Orleans.
His 16-under 128 gave him a three-stroke lead and a 36-hole
tournament record as the par-72, 7,116-yard course continued to yield
low scores.
Brian Gay (66) and Todd Barranger (65), players who have rarely
made a cut this season, were tied for second.
Pewaukee's Mark Wilson fired a 67 and was in a group of five
players four strokes off the pace at 142.
"The par-5s are playing real short," said Wilson, who opened with
a 65. "I'm not a long hitter at all and I hit a 5-iron into the
