South Milwaukee sued for waste flaws

Citations didn't bring sewer system cleanup, state says

South Milwaukee -- The state Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit seeking civil forfeitures that could exceed $18.25 million from the City of South Milwaukee for violations of environmental law in its waste treatment program.

The state rarely takes such cases to court, preferring to persuade communities to comply and clean up rather than pay fines. But in South Milwaukee's case, the state Department of Natural Resources says that hasn't worked. The DNR has cited South Milwaukee at least five times since 1997 for ...
