Natural gas demand outruns supply, pushing prices higher

Greenspan predicts costs to consumers, businesses will continue to rise

Washington -- Consumers and businesses facing sharply rising prices for natural gas won't see any relief soon, Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan warned Tuesday.

The price of gas has nearly doubled in the past year to $6.31 per thousand cubic feet because of persistent shortages, and there is about one chance in four that by winter "the peak price will exceed $7.50" per thousand cubic feet, Greenspan said.
