'Matrix' a sum of ideological parts

"The Matrix" was a unique creation, but its components were familiar.

The 1999 sleeper hit combined a mind-bending look at the future with stunning visuals, revolutionizing science-fiction movies.

Its plot, about a world in which machines enslave humans in a dreamlike state to extract energy from their bodies, questioned the nature of reality, making us rethink our own universe.

"The Matrix" has spawned two highly anticipated sequels: "The Matrix Reloaded," which opened Thursday, and "The Matrix Revolutions," which follows on Nov. 5.
