Brewers are Rule 5 pioneers

Goal's to not overpay for shortstop Cruz

New York -- The Milwaukee Brewers became financial trailblazers of sorts Tuesday with their unique two-year extension of shortstop Enrique Cruz's contract.

To the best of their knowledge, the Brewers became the first major- league team to give an extension to a Rule 5 draft pick. Rules require a team to keep a Rule 5 pick -- an unprotected player taken from another team's system -- all season or offer him back to his original club or another through waivers. Cruz was selected in December from the New York Mets.
