How do fax machines work, asks Kyle Farrell, a student on Long
Island, N.Y.
"Fax" is short for "facsimile," meaning "to make similar." A
document or photograph is scanned at one end. A few minutes later a
copy rolls out of another fax machine -- across the office or
thousands of miles away.
Fax machines became cheaper -- and wildly popular -- in the 1980s.
Today, nearly every office has one -- or hundreds. Businesses fax
letters, signed contracts, diagrams and other documents. Radio
listeners fax favorite song requests to disc jockeys. And according
