Before Sammy Sosa's bat broke and cork sprayed all over the infield, the subject of baseball bats rarely had been discussed in recent times. Yet one of the fallouts from the incident has been a rekindled interest in the bat. How much does it help to make a hitter great? How do bats differ? Is it possible, as Sosa claims he did, to mistakenly use a batting-practice bat in a game, since players treat their bats as tenderly as babies and know everything about them?
