Tiny San Marino has problems convincing people it's on the map

San Marino -- When Gianluigi Conti was traveling in South America a few years ago, he was nearly detained by immigration officials who didn't recognize his passport.

"They didn't know San Marino existed," he said.

It was an understandable mistake. With a population of 28,000, the Republic of San Marino is Europe's second-smallest country, after Vatican City. Founded in 301, it covers just 24 square miles, a landlocked city-state in the northeast of Italy, six miles inland from the coastal resort of Rimini.
