Jones joining crowded race for mayor

Chief cites his tenure leading police, managing a budget

Milwaukee Police Chief Arthur Jones, who has often accused Mayor John O. Norquist of wanting to be chief, said Monday that he would join the 2004 race to replace Norquist as mayor.

Jones, who created a campaign committee last week, made his announcement in a radio interview on WMCS (1290-AM). He told the Journal Sentinel that he plans to hold a formal kickoff event after his term ends as chief and would put some of his own money into the race, though he declined to say how much.
