Israel approves compromise on security barrier

Jerusalem -- Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's government on Wednesday approved a 28-mile addition to a security barrier dividing Israel and the West Bank, but under pressure from the Bush administration, it agreed to leave gaps in the disputed fence.

The route approved for the next section of the security fence was a compromise. Right-wing ministers in Sharon's cabinet wanted to build a barrier around Ariel, some 13 miles deep inside the West Bank on land Palestinians claim for a future state, and connect it to an already completed 90-mile section of fence.
