Shine up your soup pot, hang on to that ham bone. Get ready to celebrate National Split Pea Soup Week.

If this strikes you as just another cheap way to promote a cause - - in this case, the sale of more peas -- you're right, it is exactly that.

But the timing of this announcement, which comes from the USA Dry Pea and Lentil Council, is nearly perfect. It's getting colder, it's dark outside way too much of the time, and a steaming bowl of "pease porridge hot" sounds awfully appealing right now.
