Where's the beef?

Hard-core rap has a time-honored tradition of gaining critical street cred by dissing your peers in your albums, on the stage and through underground mix tapes circulated by DJs and other players.

One of the more recent high-profile beefs, between multiplatinum rappers 50 Cent and Ja Rule, had, at various points, escalated into answer songs and alleged physical altercations. Then it just kind of . . . went away. The long-simmering feud is old news -- just ask the artists' fans.

But the stale flavor of Ja Rule vs. 50 Cent beef didn't stop BET, MTV ...
