State lost credit unions in 2003

Loss due to takeovers; assets, membership grew

Takeovers left Wisconsin with fewer than 300 state-chartered credit unions last year, the smallest number since the 1930s.

While there are fewer of them, the 298 credit unions gained members and added assets.

Assets, mostly loans, rose more than 9% to $12.8 billion in 2003, according to the Wisconsin Office of Credit Unions. Membership increased about 1.5% last year to 1.97 million.
