Finding a cure for Lake Michigan

Watershed seminar explores solutions to environmental ills

Having cataloged the ills besetting Lake Michigan -- mercury in the fish, dirty beaches unfit for swimming, invasive species -- Judy Beck of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency offered a blunt summary this week:

"If I were from a different federal agency, if I represented Homeland Security," she told a crowd of 270 at the Four Points by Sheraton in Brown Deer, "I would probably be telling you that we are seriously considering an orange alert."

That's "high risk" on the new terror alert scale.
