Valarie Hill approached election night as all the other candidates did April 6.

Nervous about the voter tally, not yet sure of victory or defeat, she measured election results by the shouts of excited supporters, who monitored coverage of the returns on the television screen at the Hilton Milwaukee City Center.

It wasn't until the next morning that Hill, "dog tired" from campaigning, really understood what had happened.
