Bush might get the Gore treatment from the Electoral College

If the 2004 presidential contest between President Bush and Sen. John Kerry turns out to be as close as many political observers anticipate, Americans should brace themselves for the possibility that the candidate who wins the popular vote will again fail to capture enough Electoral College votes to triumph.

That's right -- 2004 could be another "misfired election," which is what we political scientists call those races that end with such a split result. But here's the twist: This time, Bush could be the candidate on the losing end of the equation.
