Cattle in state to undergo mad cow testing

East Troy -- An intensified effort in Wisconsin to look for mad cow disease is expected to begin June 1, the state Board of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection was told at a meeting here Wednesday.

As part of a ramped-up federal program to test more cattle for the fatal brain disease, between 17,248 and 23,040 cattle are expected to be tested in Wisconsin during the first year to 18 months of the program, state veterinarian Robert Ehlenfeldt told the board.

That represents a dramatic increase from fewer than 2,900 tests here last year.
