La Russa extra-careful with Pujols

Albert Pujols might be available to pinch hit after getting treatment on his sore left hamstring Monday, but St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said he would try to avoid using his first baseman.

Before the Cardinals opened a series against the Chicago Cubs, La Russa said, "Is there a situation where he could pinch hit, depending on how he feels? The answer is probably yes. Are we going to try and avoid using him? Absolutely."

John Mabry played first in Pujols' place as the Cardinals won, 4- 3, at Wrigley Field.

Pujols was hurt Sunday while running the bases against Houston.
