Madison -- The state Supreme Court ruled Friday that police officers can sue the owners of dogs that bite or injure them while they're working.

Wisconsin's "firefighter rule," which bars emergency medical technicians and firefighters from suing over negligence, does not apply to police officers, Justice Patience Roggensack wrote for the majority in a divided opinion.

"There are many differences between firefighters and police officers," Roggensack wrote.
