Ham, too, benefits from a festive beer
You don't need a royal wedding to make herbed cheese biscuits
Last week, we began a trio of Oktoberfest menus with the Black
Forest Gateau. In this second installment, we take a gander at a hop-
happy ham, while next week we feature beer-infused seafood.
I don't know exactly what was on the menu for the 1810 wedding of
Crown Prince Ludwig to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen that
began the tradition of Oktoberfest, but I would bet my last deutsche
mark that somewhere on the royal banquet table were pork and pickled
vegetables, staples of German fare.
Brats and sauerkraut may do for an informal affair, but if you
