Carpenter goes for blue-collar vote, but lacks some party backers
Tim Carpenter's name fits the image he seeks to project.
The Democratic state senator wants voters to know he's a
hardworking guy from blue-collar Milwaukee roots, trying to hammer
together a winning coalition in his race for the 4th Congressional
District seat.
But if Carpenter hasn't been nailing down as much support -- or
campaign cash -- as his two opponents in Tuesday's Democratic
primary, it might have something to do with another part of his
image: a maverick streak.
Last year, Carpenter broke ranks with fellow Democrats and joined
Republicans in an unsuccessful bid to override Gov. Jim Doyle's veto
of a state budget ...
