Collections for food baskets lag this year
Group extends deadline for helping over holidays
Donations to help provide holiday food baskets to the unemployed
in Racine County are down by about a third, organizers said Thursday.
Continued high unemployment in Racine was blamed for the downturn
in donations.
"People who were donating to the program last year are recipients
this year," Dan Taivalkoski, executive director of the Racine County
Food Bank.
Money is being raised to support the "Because Labor Cares" Food
Basket Program, coordinated by the food bank and the Labor Advisory
Committee of United Way of Racine County.
The program goal is to raise $3,300, but as of Thursday only
