2004 tournament's success makes site appealing replacement for venue that was up against 2010 Olympics

With the United States Golf Association set to discuss Whistling Straits as a potential venue for the 2012 U.S. Open, the PGA of America appears poised to beat the USGA to the punch.

Whistling Straits is the front-runner to replace Sahalee Country Club near Redmond, Wash., as the site of the 2010 PGA Championship, according to several high-placed sources.

The announcement could come as early as next week.
