Article: Prince George's School Board Passes $858 Million Budget; Increased Spending to Reduce Class Size, Raise Salaries Faces County Council Scrutiny

The Prince George's County Board of Education approved an $858 million operating budget last night designed to help reduce class size, raise teacher pay, improve school safety and provide textbooks for every student in every core subject.

The budget request, which is $78 million more than spending for the current school year, now goes to County Executive Wayne K. Curry (D) and the County Council, which must approve a budget for the 1998-99 school year by the end of May. The council in past years has not approved a full budget request, but school officials said they hope there will be no major cuts this year.
