Ice conditions were generally good for the Lake Winnebago and
upriver lakes sturgeon spearing seasons, both of which opened at 6:30
a.m. Saturday.
"The ice is very good," said Ron Bruch, sturgeon biologist with
the Department of Natural Resources at Oshkosh. "The recent rain
melted the snow and the cold should make the ice better." There was
about 16 to 18 inches of ice on much of Lake Winnebago, he said.
Water clarity, another important factor in spearing success, was
also good. "In over 80% of the lake, you can see to the bottom,"
Bruch said.
