Article: Off to; a good; start

Ice conditions were generally good for the Lake Winnebago and upriver lakes sturgeon spearing seasons, both of which opened at 6:30 a.m. Saturday.

"The ice is very good," said Ron Bruch, sturgeon biologist with the Department of Natural Resources at Oshkosh. "The recent rain melted the snow and the cold should make the ice better." There was about 16 to 18 inches of ice on much of Lake Winnebago, he said.

Water clarity, another important factor in spearing success, was also good. "In over 80% of the lake, you can see to the bottom," Bruch said.

This year, there is a one-day season on the upriver lakes Buttes
